Fourth Eye is a security-based system design for school transportation, mainly functional inside school buses. Through this project our aim was to understand and implement a system with the focus of keeping parents informed and at ease when their child is commuting to school.
This is a group project which started with a brief to work on any system which involved education and security. Before reaching a conclusion, we worked with ideas such as educating people about safety and the safety of girl children in schools.
01 · Discover
Research
To get a better understanding of the focus and the cause, we studied and looked into the existing systems. As for the primary research, field visits and interviews with stakeholders were taken to understand their perspective of the whole problem. Research papers and a few articles were reviewed as part of our secondary research.
Interviews of the stakeholders in question, students, teachers, school administration and parents were taken to gain in-depth insights of the existing school transportation system. The main objectives were to know about the mode of transportation and experience by the students, responsibilities, safety and security measures adopted by the school administration and the expectations and issues concerning parents.
02 · Define
Understanding Focus
On the basis of infrastructure, security and transportation, schools in India can be broadly divided into three primary tiers with consideration of society.
We compared these tiers across 3 categories:
- Security in premises
- Mode of Commuting
- Security while Commuting
While the crew was out in the field looking for every little vulnerability in the current system, they were also carefully studying secondary sources of data and information, like the national study of safe commute to school and government guidelines for school buses.
03 · Develop
Secondary Research & Ideation
The team developed a stakeholder map that is clearly defined and covers practically every little connection in the existing system as a consequence of the secondary research and field study.
This is where the knowledge gained from the research was put to use. The team and I started brainstorming after giving each minor revelation enough consideration.
A crucial component of the new system is the students’ ID card, which has minimal but effective technology. We concentrated on making the card extremely tough for students to damage while still being simple to use in an emergency throughout the brainstorming process.
04 · Deliver
Final Product
This is the structure of our system, which is defined by the boundary between the house and the school, with each component ensuring maximum protection for the students and comfort for the parents. The trip of a student from home to school, as well as the system components in action along the way, are depicted in the ensuing infographic.
Below are the final products for both the ID cards and the surveillance systems inside the bus for the safety of the students and the app helping parents understand and be calm about their safety.
