At a glance

The challenge
Prolonged sitting and poor posture compress the spine. Chakrasana (wheel pose) counteracts it, but needs shoulder flexibility and arm strength most people don’t have.
Who it’s for
Professionals who sit or travel for long hours, using the station in office lobbies and shared spaces.
What I did
Tested a proof of concept with experts and users, mapped stakeholders and tested materials, then explored concepts, handles and a single variable-radius curve built on a jig.
Outcome
Meru-4S: a lightweight iron-rod spine stretching station, designed around the problems found in testing, that doubles as semi-private lobby seating.

  • Helps in posture correction
  • Helps in easing out paraspinal spasms
  • Activates posterior chain muscle groups
  • Improves Spinal Mobility

Product Pros

  • Very easy to extend knees
  • Ease of Access
  • Ease of Adjustment (position)

After Research with the POC and the users the below problems have been found:

The main problems that need to be addressed:

  • Railings need to be added to help users climb onto the bench easily
  • The bed should be wider to accommodate wider shoulders of the users
  • The stairs could not be navigated with ease while getting on and getting down
  • Increase Comfort for the users
  • Make the Aesthetics Suitable for Corporates.

Ideation and Initial Concepts

After some user testing, stakeholder mapping, material testing, and affordance and signifier differentiation:

  • We decided the stretching station should be a piece of space furniture
  • Should be lightweight
  • Development of handles to be considered
  • Manufacturing should be prioritized
  • I worked on concepts and curves based on the research
  • Ideating on these concepts took the longest time in the project
  • I decided that using iron rods would be the lightest and most approachable concept for the requirements of the institution

Exploration with the Curve

Ideating on the curve of the bench has been one of the crucial tasks as the users had to be safe while the product maintained its task of stretching the spine. I arrived at a free-flowing, neutral curve. The whole product is based on the same curve as the curve had a variable radius and needed a jig to attain it.

In essence, the product is a spine stretching station designed as space furniture, for professionals who sit or travel for long periods. This station provides semi-privacy for the users and rigid structure which could also be used to sit on so it could be a part of the lobby in any space.
